Depicts the construction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway at Edge Hill. A locomotive hauls a train of wagons filled with spoil on a steep sided cutting, as a train on the opposite track recedes into the distance. High above navvies hack at the rock with pickaxes. This is a later version of the print, as the first version showed a steam locomotive operating in the tunnel between Edge Hill and Wapping in Liverpool, which was innaccurate, and contravened the Act which authorised the railway.
